With Valentine’s Day just around the corner… I thought it would be the perfect time to introduce you to my Valentine, through his eyes! My husband, Tysson, is a professional athlete, personal trainer, and high school basketball coach. He’s also my best friend and business partner.
Tysson and I spent 5 long years apart while he pursued his career in football. He lived with me during off-season and then moved 300+ miles away during the other 7 months of the year. Being apart definitely forced me to learn independence, but most of all, it taught me that my dreams were important, too.
The best thing about being married to someone who shares my passion for health and fitness is that there is never judgement. We do something we love together, we value our health as a priority, and we are both at our happiest when we are active and eating well. What I love about Tysson, though, is that he encourages me to practice balance. We may drink protein shakes for breakfast, but you bet we enjoy a glass of wine at dinner!
So let’s see what he has to say about all of this health and nutrition stuff!
Through His Eyes
So what’s it like being married to a health and nutrition blogger?
Well, it’s a little bit like having bag of Skittles (laughs). I get to taste the rainbow. We try all different types of foods, and we have fun mixing things up to see what tastes good together. The main thing that’s changed since Raquel started blogging is that I have to wait 15 minutes to eat while she takes pictures 😉 We also go to the grocery store a lot more than we used to! I think we’ve ran through about 4 jars of almond butter this month. But all in all, I’m really enjoying it.
How have your cooking skills improved?
I’ve definitely learned how to add more flavor! I play around with different ingredients and seasonings, and have gotten a lot better at grilling since we cook at home most of the time. I usually start dinner when Raquel is on her way home from work, so I have to know how to use all of the tools, too. I would say the Inspiralizer is probably my favorite and the most fun to cook with!
What is your favorite Pretty Pretty Pineapple recipe?
That’s a tough one. It’s honestly hard to pick a favorite. I love the protein bites she’s been making recently, and I really like all of the tacos we come up with. Oh, and the pizzas! Those are tough to beat, too. I’m going to have to go with the dessert, though…
Did you participate in the Dollar a Day Meal Plan?
I didn’t help come up with the recipes, but as her clients did the meals, we did them, too. I really enjoyed it. It was a good way to make sure I was getting enough nutrients, but still enjoying a variety of food.
What does your workout regimen look like?
Right now I work out about 6 days a week. I’ll usually emphasize lower body and upper body on Monday and Tuesday, and then do full body workouts the rest of the week. Sometimes I’ll incorporate double or triple days, meaning I could do CrossFit, speed training, and an upper-body burnout all in one day. To increase my strength and speed, I make sure to focus on explosive movements, which engage fast-twitch muscles and enhance power.
What health and fitness advice would you give Pretty Pretty Pineapple readers?
I would say find something that you enjoy. It can be any kind of fitness… from strength training, to biking or swimming. Find your passion, set a goal, and try to get better every week. Set the bar and try to do that same activity or exercise a week later. See if you can do it better or faster. This is a great way to gauge your improvement.
I hope you enjoyed this perspective, through his eyes! My hope is to incorporate my husband’s fitness expertise into future blog posts and videos. Please make sure to comment and let us know what you’d like to see!
